recently received a good amount of money from a work related injury and now have the opportunity to pay off the $20000 of credit card debt I …
The hole just got much deeper. Fools use the HEL to pay off the credit cards, …. This is how I work my credit card debt and i have alot of it. … I think a home equity line of credit should be used in the most dire of emergency … that you can pay your debt down and save some money to make lump sum payments.

where you live but look at your credit report as they sold it to collection company and maybe more than once to keep the debt alive

Ideally use the lump sum to pay as much off as possible. But make an agreement with them that your lump sum should give you enough down time afterwards before having to continue paying the remaining.
The longer this debt stays on your credit history the more difficult it is for you to find credit for other links.

Offer a lump sum payment that you can afford in full and final settlement of the debt! This works in the UK where you can get as much as 60% discount if pay the balance in full.
